International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, November 25

Gender-based violence remains one of the most widespread and pervasive human rights violations in the world. It is estimated that, globally, almost one in three women have experienced physical and/or sexual violence at least once in their lifetime. Even more alarmingly, every ten minutes, a woman or girl is killed by her partner or another family member.
This is a scourge that has intensified in various settings, but this year the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women campaign focuses on one in particular: the digital realm. Violence against women on online platforms is, today, a serious and rapidly escalating threat that aims to silence the voices of many women, especially those with a high public and digital presence in fields such as politics, activism, and journalism.
It is a form of violence on the rise due to weak technological regulation, a lack of legal recognition of this type of aggression in some countries, the impunity of the platforms, new and rapid forms of abuse with AI, movements against gender equality, the anonymity of the aggressors and the scarce support for digital victims.
